Sumitomo Chemical Celebrates Global Partnership and the Distribution of 2 Billion Lifesaving Mosquito Nets

Clementina Akinyi and millions of children around the world like her have grown up malaria-free thanks to the life-saving mosquito net. Join us as we celebrate the distribution of the 2 billionth net this year.

By 2030, the global community has committed to achieving sustainable development goals, including greater health for everyone. Sumitomo Chemical and partners worldwide committed to ending malaria are celebrating today a significant global milestone that will occur this year: the distribution of the 2 billionth insecticide-treated bed net (or “mosquito net”).

Contributing to one of the greatest global health success stories of our time, the lifesaving mosquito net has helped save more than 7 million lives and prevented over 1 billion malaria cases since 2000 – helping to put the world on a path to ending malaria within a generation.

The global community is taking a moment to recognize this important milestone and partners’ role in achieving it. But the fight isn’t over. If we’re going to end malaria, we need to expand coverage of mosquito nets to reach those who are most vulnerable – the 39% of pregnant women and children under 5 living in sub-Saharan Africa who still don’t have access to a mosquito net and who are at greatest risk. We also need to stay ahead of the evolving mosquito by introducing innovative tools like next generation nets that are combatting insecticide resistance, using data to target where to distribute the mosquito nets where they’re most needed and increasing monitoring and management of insecticide resistance.
